The Trump administration has made it clear that the United States will continue to back India’s bid for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group(NSG) thus strengthening the ties between the two countries

The United States will continue to support India in its NSG bid under President Donald Trump in keeping with the warm relations both countries share with each other irrespective of the party in power.

PTI news agency reported quoting a state department spokesperson saying that the United States supports India’s full membership in the four multilateral export control regimes and believes that India is ready for NSG membership. He added that they are coordinating with their Indian counterparts as well as the NSG Participating Governments to help advance India’s case for membership.

The Obama administration's support for India in this matter seemed to lack the aggression but it couldn't be confirmed whether the new government would be aggressive enough to help India get a place in NSG.

In March 2016, India had applied for membership of the 48-country group, which controls global sale and purchase of nuclear material and equipment, and with the US backing, it had aggressively campaigned its case.

China had strongly opposed India's entry into the NSG as India had earlier refused to sign the non-proliferation treaty. India called this move discriminatory and despite several discussions, China has refused to change its stand.
