A story written by JRR Tolkien around 100 years ago has now been published under the name ' Beren and Luthien' and will soon be up for sale
‘Lord of the Rings’ author JRR Tolkien's new book which was written 100 years ago has been edited by his son Christopher Tolkien, 92, and has been published. The book titled ‘Beren and Lúthien’ has been described as a “very personal story” that Tolkien thought up after returning from the Battle of the Somme in 1916,
The story is about the fate of lovers Beren and Luthien, a mortal man and an immortal elf who together try to steal from the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor.
Alan Lee, who won an Academy Award for his work on Peter Jackson’s film trilogy has illustrated the book. HarperCollins is the publisher of the book.
Tolkien specialist John Garth, who wrote ‘Tolkien And The Great War’ said that the book was a reflection of the horrors Tolkien had witnessed in the First World War. He was totally shaken up after the war.
He had lost two of his dearest friends and became like a wreck, both physically and mentally. The names Beren and Luthien are carved on the gravestone Tolkien and his wife share in Wolvercote Cemetery in Oxford.
The story has therefore been described as a very personal story.
