Sahithi Pingali made India proud as she gets a planet in the Milky way named after her!
Sahithi Pingali, a 16 year old Bengaluru girl will get a small planet in the Milky Way named after her. Her work for city’s polluted lakes has attributed to her honour.
The Ceres Connection programme run by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Society for Science and the Public will name the planet after her. She won second prize in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair ISEF at Los Angeles. In addition to this, she won three more prizes. She won awards for developing an application based system for monitoring water bodies. She is doing her internship at the University of Michigan's Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Centre.
Sahithi said that 90 percent of water bodies are contaminated by sewage let into it and there is minimal monitoring to keep a check on the discharge of sewage in the former. Her system has electronic sensors that help to collect the physical and chemical parameters of the water and test strips to judge the level of contamination in the water. The data and results found are later then uploaded on the cloud. She terms it the “water health map.”
Sahithi has made our nation proud and proved that sky is the limit!
