First AC local of the country hits the tracks in Mumbai
This year, Christmas brought lots of cheer to Mumbaikars as the city got its first fully air-conditioned local train which is also a first for the entire country. The inaugural AC rake ran between Andheri and Churchgate on Monday.
However, the train will have no service on weekends. It will run five days a week with a minimum fare of Rs 60 and the maximum fare is Rs 220. One can also avail of weekly, fortnightly and monthly season tickets.
The 12-coach AC train with self-closing doors will offer an inaugural discount of 10% on the AC local fare for the first six months.
he AC train will ply from Churchgate to Borivali or up to Virar on the fast corridor. The only slow AC service will be from Mahalaxmi to Borivli after which it will run from Borivli to Churchgate.
The railway officials are a bit apprehensive about this new local as it is a new technology and any failure will have a huge cascading impact on the entire local train timetable. They also worry that the since the train moves only after the doors are shut, passengers blocking the doors will hold up the trains.
If the train has a successful run, 11 more rakes of a similar design and technology will be made. The train was manufactured at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and reached Mumbai in 2016. The safety certification was issued in December after a series of trials.
This landmark of Mumbai’s lifeline promises Mumbaikars with a comfortable ride through the coming summer.
