India-Israel strengthen cultural ties
With a view to promoting people-to-people contacts between India and Israel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced the setting up of an Indian Cultural Centre in Israel.
Modi, who was given an extraordinary welcome on his visit to Israel, held wide-ranging talks with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.
According to a joint statement issued after the talks between the two leaders, Modi recognized the contribution of the Jewish community in India and Jews of Indian origin in Israel in bringing the two countries closer. He also announced the opening of an Indian Cultural Centre in Israel.
Prime Minister Netanyahu warmly welcomed this amiable gesture and expressed his deep respect for Indian culture and recalled how Israel came out in total support and sponsorship of PM Modi’s initiative for people of the world to benefit from yoga by designating June 21 as International Yoga Day.
Noah Massil, the founder President of Central Organisation of Indian Jews in Israel said that it was the dream of the Indian community here to have an Indian Cultural Centre and the announcement by Modi is like the fulfillment of that dream. There is an Indian Cultural centre in Cairo and Israel also wanted one.
Massil said that when the government allocates land for the Indian cultural centre, about 47 synagogues of the Indian Jewish community will pitch in with financial support.
