Passengers taking sea-route can know their whereabouts after using the app.
If all goes well then passengers who are travelling through water route can know where exactly they are. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) will soon launch an app for seafarers to access their location and also navigate in the sea with internet connectivity. As per a report submitted in DNA Newspaper, Atul Patne, Chief Executive Officer of the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) said, "We are working on a mobile application for passengers which will work irrespective of whether data services are available or no. We already have hydrography and documentary data available with us.” Apart from their location, now people will be able to check tourists spots around the jetties. The app will give details of location, nearest port and lighthouse. It will also give information about the depth of the water. "It will help seafarers and cargo and passenger movement. The app will be similar to Google Maps-based navigation services deployed by app-based taxis like Ola and Uber," explained Patne. As of now, the master boats travel on a route. He further added, “At present, master boats travel on a route and set a GPS trail to be followed by other vessels later. However, this will be more advanced.”
