Once completely washed away school gets rewarded today...
A Proud moment for the Panchayat Union Middle School of Keechankuppam in Nagapattinam district as it has been chosen for the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar. This National Award by the Ministry of Human Resources is given to encourage, inspire and practice cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in government schools.
The most deserving school was chosen among the 100 other schools in the country and will be rewarded with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.
A truly inspiring journey of this village sets a wonderful example for others. 2004 tsunami left the village completely devastated. Almost 80 children and 570 other people were killed from the village.
Rebuilt by funds from institutions, local communities and the district administration, now it has a strength of 450 students. This year, they get three prestigious prizes back to back. Fortunately, R. Balu, the school headmaster will be receiving a national-level award from the President for the second time in two years. Last year, he received the Best Teacher (National) award from the former President Pranab Mukherjee. The school was also honoured with the Kamarajar Best School award by the State government at the start of the year.
The Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar will be received by the representatives of the Panchayat Union Middle School on 1st Sep from the President Ram Nath Kovind.
