Himachal Pradesh first hill state in the country to run electric buses
Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has launched its electric bus service route on Manali-Rohtang highway on a regular basis on Thursday. This has given Himachal Pradesh the distinction of being the first hill state in the country to run electric buses.
Two buses having a seating capacity of 27 and 32 respectively will initially ply on the route. There are plans to add 50 more electric buses. The buses will ply on Manali-Kullu and Mandi routes during winters when the road to Rohtang is blocked with snow. Electricity charging points have been installed at Manali and Marhi.
Transportation minister G S Bali laid the foundation stone of the modern buses and flagged off the buses to Rohtang. He said that their drive to replace diesel buses with electric buses has begun. The state plans to expand its number of electric buses in the next ten years.
Bali stated that with a view of minimizing the carbon emission, conventional vehicles will be replaced by eco-friendly ones. Modern bus stands will also be built in all villages.
Due to environmental concerns, the Green Tribunal had ordered the Himachal government to prevent diesel and petrol vehicles from plying on the Manali-Rohtang route.
