Nilambur teak has been granted the Geographical Identification (GI) status by the GI registry, Chennai. The teak is world famous for its superior timber quality and appearance. Nilambur is a place near the Nilgiri hills in the Malappuram district of Kerala.
Agriculture minister V S Sunilkumar said that the IPR cell of Kerala Agriculture University (KAU) had received a communication from the GI registry granting GI status on this exclusive teak variety.
C R Elsy of the IPR cell (KAU) said, "It is the first time that a forest produce was added to the list of products with GI tag, and agencies like the food and agriculture organization (FAO) have appreciated this pioneering effort."
KAU IPR Cell was assisted by the College of Forestry, KFRI, Department of Forests and NGOs like Nilambur Teak Heritage Society in its efforts to obtain GI status for Nilambur teak.
Abdulllakutty of Nilambur Teak Heritage Society said that they were very glad to hear the news as GI tag will help to conserve Nilambur teak. About 10,000 workers and traders are dependent on teak for their livelihood, and the GI tag will help them ear more as it will as it will block the sale of fake products.
