An Indian teenage girl with a unique app...
An Indian teenage girl named Kavya Kopparapu has come up with an ingenious mobile application that can detect eye disease!
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a preventable eye disorder contracted by diabetic patients. Almost 50 percent of the cases of DR go unnoticed which makes it untreatable. The process of detection of this disease involves the process of retinal imagining that is taking the images of back of the eyes. But the cost of the equipment and trained staff makes the process expensive and out of reach for many.
Kavya Kopparapu along with her team tried analyzing the images of DR with the help of the neural network. Neural network is a very effective way of applying machine learning that scans huge sets of data and extract the similarities encountered. They fed their network with about 34000 retinal scans. Their smartphone application ‘EYEAGNOSIS’ uses the camera of the smartphone and a 3D printed lens that concentrates the light from the camera flash onto the back of the eye for proper imaging.
Putting artificial intelligence at its best is what this application does and loads of praises to the girl who aspires to be known as a computer scientist that happens to be a girl!
