Expressways will now become faster than before.
You might soon be able to drive at a speed of 130-140 kmph on expressways and the Centre is planning to enhance the speed limits.
The current speed limit is 100 kmph. The changes are being introduced over the proper control access being established in most of the expressways built across the country. Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had spoken about the speeds of the vehicles onto the highways where slow vehicles and pedestrians are not allowed, at the investor summit in Gurgaon. He clearly mentioned that as the expressways will be access controlled now with minimum entry and exit points, separate norms will be made keeping in mind safety as the parameter of change.
Mr. Gadkari has also announced the earliest rollout of the Mumbai-Vadodara, Delhi-Jaipur and Delhi-Amritsar expressways. The bids for the first stretch will commence in next 2-3 weeks. Also the ministry in under talks that whether bituminous coat must be added on concrete roads to check tire bursts thereby ensuring safety.
The ministry is trying to modernize the entire transport system in the nation and will declare more of the state highways to be converted to national highways to expand the stretch and ensure better connectivity.
