A big amount of Rs. 50 lakhs will be awarded as the cash prize and Rs. 5 lakhs as category awards!
To assess the progress of various smart cities’ projects, the government will conduct a contest with a cash prize of Rs. 50 lakhs.
The projects will be evaluated based upon their quality, impact, scalability and innovation. The housing and urban affairs ministry has circulated the notice with guidelines regarding the contest to all States and Union Territories. An official said, “The 'India Smart Cities Awards Contest, 2017' is aimed at recognizing and rewarding cities, projects and innovative ideas that promote the goals of the Smart City Mission, including enhancement in quality of life of citizens.” There will also be category awards in which every winner will be awarded Rs. 5 lakhs and a scroll. The categories will be 'Improving Governance', 'Social Aspects', 'Culture and Economy', 'Environment impact', 'Transportation and Mobility' and 'Water and Sanitation'. Projects which will complete until April 1, 2018, will be eligible for the contest. The awards will be presented on the occasion of the third anniversary of the Smart City Mission, which is on June 25, 2018.
So far, 90 cities have been identified for the competition. There has been a proposed investment of Rs. 1.91 lakh crores by these cities.
