Lawyer was unanimously recommended for the revered post
Indu Malhotra became the first female lawyer in the country to be directly recommended to the post of Supreme Court judge. She was chosen unanimously by a five-judge Collegium who also recommended Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph for the six Supreme Court judge vacancies. Currently, only one female judge is serving at the apex court.
The normal practice is to elevate a high court judge to the Supreme Court, but Malhotra is the first female lawyer to be directly appointed as a judge of the top court. She was designated as a senior advocate in 2007.
She will be the seventh woman judge since independence to make it to the Supreme Court. At present, Justice R Banumathi is the lone woman judge in the apex court.
