Now women will fight shoulder to shoulder with men in Indian Army as the latter has allowed women to take up combat roles.

Indian Army will now allow women to take up combat roles in the army which were an exclusive domain for men until now. Women have not yet been recruited in combat rules due to operational and other organizational reasons.

Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat said that process is under implementation and firstly women will be recruited as military police jawans. He said that women will have to show strength while taking up this task. Already some countries have women in combat roles. These countries are Germany, Australia, Canada, the US, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, Sweden and Israel. Women are already holding positions in educational, medical, legal, engineering and signal wings of the Army.

Indian Air Force already has already recruited three women, Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh as fighter pilots when the government had passed the rule of allowing women on these jobs on an experimental basis. More women will be recruited on analyzing the performance of the three women.

Indian Navy is also in negotiations on the policy of having women on board. Women already are handling many back office jobs in the legal, architectural and engineering departments.

This transformational change has been made to break the gender barrier.
