The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is hosting the Kajawa Festival also called the Fireflies Festival in Bhandardhara in Pune and the event is expected to attract a large number of tourists
The luminous and glowing fireflies that swarm to mate during the pre-monsoon season are a treat to the eyes. They have been gradually attracting a large number of trekkers to places in and around Pune. This year, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is promoting the Kawaja festival also called the 'Fireflies Festival' in Bhandardhara and it is expected to attract a large number of tourists.
Swati Kale, general manager, MTDC said that over the past few years, there have been a stream of visitors to watch the fireflies. For many people who visit the place en route to Trimbakeshwar and Nashik, this festival would be an added attraction. She believes that as MTDC is the official organizer, the safety of the tourists will be taken care of.
MTDC had been promoting this festival on their website and it received a good response. The pre-monsoon climate is the ideal time for fireflies and glowworms to breed. They gather in thousands around trees looking for a mate and their bioluminescent lights leave the visitors spellbound. Visitors often camp under the stars to behold this magnificent spectacle.
Many MTDC festivals have been held in the past like the Nagpur Festival, Kalidas Festival, Sarangkheda Festival and Elephanta Festival and they have all gathered a great response. MTDC expects the fireflies festival to be equally popular.
