The proposal was made towards the end of last year.
The government is planning to make the Nehru Museum Memorial and Library (NMML) a monument for all former Prime Ministers of India.
The following idea is still under negotiations. There is a strong warning from the officials of NMML that the original structure dedicated to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy won’t be altered or tampered in any way. Shakti Sinha, the director of the museum said that there are proposals about having memorials for all former Prime Ministers. But this won’t be at the cost of current Nehru’s memorial or the museum. If the proposal is passed, it will be a different structure completely. A concept paper explaining government’s execution plan will be made soon.
Union Minister has confirmed that only former Prime Ministers would be accommodated in the museum. The proposal was made towards the end of last year. It is a long debated issue to have memorials of all the prime ministers. As of now, along with Nehru’s memorial, the museum has memorials of other former prime ministers namely, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.
While the NMML society members are staunch over preserving the sanctity of the heritage building, let’s see what the final decision will be!
