Sindhu is first Indian shuttler to triumph in Korea
P V Sindhu added yet another feather to her cap when she clinched her third Super Series title beating Nozomi Okuhara 22-20, 11-21, 21-18 in the women's singles final of the Korea Open. It was a clash of the titans as Sindhu who had lost to Okuhara in an epic World Badminton Championships final three weeks back won the title in a thrilling encounter in Seoul on Sunday.
For the crowds, it was an entertaining match that lasted one hour and 24 minutes. Although Okuhara dominated in the initial stage of the first game, Sindhu managed to save two game points and took the first game 22-20.
In the second game, Okuhara tried to get even with smashes. Sindhu tried in vain to connect with the crosscourt backhand whip and Okuhara claimed the second game with a thumping 10-point margin.
In the third and deciding game, Sindhu took over. She took initiative with the attacks and managed to maintain a healthy lead for the most part of the game. Okuhara seemed to be going down as Sindhu took a six-point advantage. Yet while Okuhara was giving a tough fight, Sindhu managed to convert the second of the three match point opportunities to clinch the title and become the first Indian shuttler to win in Korea.
Coach Pullela Gopichand praised the players and said that both players are great champions and showed great spirit and determination.
