Scheme facilitates easy electricity to every household
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana ‘Saubhagya’ which will provide free electricity connections to four crore rural homes so that the homes of the poor will be electrified.
He said that the poor will not have to go after the government officials, but the electrical connections will be delivered at the doors of the rural poor. It will cost the government Rs 16,000 crore which will not be retrieved from the poor.
The PM also inaugurated the Deendayal Urja Bhawan on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and RK Singh.
An amount of Rs 16,320 crore will be required for the Saubhagya Yojana which will be funded largely by the government at the Centre. The Yojana will include access to electricity to all willing households, substitution to kerosene, improvement in educational and health services, improvement in communication and public safety.
The scheme will come as huge relief to the poor as apart from providing free electricity connection, it will also increase job opportunities and will lead to a better quality of life, especially for women.
Modi said that the scheme has been launched with the intent to bring a monumental change in the lives of the poor. He added that 3,000 villages remain unelectrified from 18,000 villages that were without power three years back. He informed that India is moving towards becoming electricity surplus from the deficit.
