All railway stations to be 100 percent LED lit
The Indian Railways on Tuesday announced its plans to make all stations 100 percent LED lit by April 2018. Apart from saving crores in electricity bills, this eco-friendly measure will also go a long way in the conservation of the environment.
In a statement, the Railways revealed that it would provide energy efficient lighting to all stations and staff colonies by the end of the financial year March 31, 2018.
The Railways has already provided 3,500 railway stations with LED lights till November 2017. LED or light-emitting diode bulbs are more energy efficient and have a longer lifespan than traditional lamps. It will help Railways conserve 240 million units of electricity, which will save the Railways about Rs 180 crore annually.
As per the directives issued by the Indian Railways, LED light fittings will be provided to residential quarters of the Zonal Railways. Subsequently, the Zonal Railways had distributed about 20 lakh LED lights to railway staff till October 2017, under the government's Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) Scheme.
The Railways will soon be installing these lights in all its coaches as well. Already, the lights in 1300 non-AC second-class and 3-tier sleeper coaches have been fully converted to LED.
