Where there is a will, there is a way...The tallest sculpture of Goddess Durga reconstructed braving all adversities
A 100 ft tall idol of Durga made from bamboo in Assam is all set to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest bamboo sculpture ever made in the world.
This innovative idea is the brainchild of artisans of Bishnupur Durga Puja Committee, Guwahati whose art director is Nuruddin Ahmed who designs the structure and is assisted by 40 artisans. They planned and began their work from August 1st.
Ahmed has erected his first Puja Pandal in 1975 in Assam and thereafter till date has worked skillfully on more than 200 Puja pandals. Ahmed views his artwork as a service to humanity.
"Many people ask me why I make such Idols as I am a Muslim. But I want to tell that I have been doing this work since 1975. I always think that an artist has no religion and his only religion and duty is to serve humanity," Ahmed told ANI.
To make this world's tallest bamboo sculpture was not an easy task. They have used 5,000 bamboo poles of various kinds. Initially, their idea was to build an idol of 110 ft and hence started working two months back. But unfortunately, the sudden storm on 17th August changed the whole picture. The whole structure was broken and they had a big challenge in front of them to complete this unique artwork in just 6 days.
Though seemed difficult was not impossible thought the artists and all started their work fresh all over again with full swing and faith in Maa Durga, Goddess of Shakti. And till now almost 70 percent of their work is completed and will be ready by four-day Durga Puja celebrations which will begin on September 27.
The speciality of this idol is that the whole structure is made entirely of bamboo and no metal or plastic has been used anywhere.
