A reason to smile, water inside the vending machine quenches your thirst
Taking into consideration the increasing plastic waste generated after using the bottled water, Sout Delhi Municipal Corporation is doing its bit to reduce the problem. The corporation has initiated a project of installing 100 water ATMs in various areas. People will be able to get chilled water from the ATMs at just Rs 2 for 250 ml of water in a paper glass. Those who already have a bottle can also refill the bottle at the cost of Rs 5. The agency initially installed a water ATM at Defence Colony Market as a pilot project. Welcoming this move, about 300 people used water ATM daily
“The buyers include visitors as well as people who can’t afford to buy bottled water at Rs 20 such as drivers, guards and staff working at shops in the market. But the idea is not to earn money but provide clean drinking water to the public in an eco- friendly manner,” said an SDMC official. Those who worry about the water inside the vending machine need not worry. The machine contains reverse osmosis (RO) water arranged from a treatment plant. The paper glassed used is also taken for recycling every day. Now the corporation is also planning to install such ATMs at busy markets, bus-stops and parking lots.
“We have already identified 20-25 points in four zones — central, south, Najafgarh and west for installing the ATMs and the tendering process for assigning the job to the contractor would start soon. The space for placing the ATMs would be provided by the SDMC only,” informed Puneet Goel, Commissioner SDMC.
