India salutes such brave souls!
Jammu and Kashmir martyr, late Col. Santosh Mahadik’s widow Swati Mahadik was commissioned to Indian Army as Lieutenant.
On this occasion, she had her family members with her; daughter Kartikee, 12, son Swaraj, seven, her mother-in-law Kalindi Ghorpade, her parents. Her husband Col. Santosh Mahadik lost his life in a gunfight with terrorists in the jungles of Haji Naka area near the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir in November 2015. He had bravely saved the lives of many men under his charge. He was later acclaimed with the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
His wife Swati Mahadik fulfilled her dream of serving the nation just like her husband by becoming Lieutenant. She had prepared rigorously for the same. She sent her kids to boarding schools and appeared the Staff Selection Board (SSB) which she successfully cleared. Then she underwent the five tier selection process which had some rounds on physical fitness and medical examinations. She was selected through this to join the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. She finally cleared her OTA training and then participated in the parade of the Indian Army as a Lieutenant.
This was a very proud moment for both her family and herself. She broke out in tears after the parade when she was consoled by her family. Kudos to such brave souls!
