A Proud moment for Indian...
Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Sardar Sarovar Dam on river Narmada, whose foundation stone was laid on April 5, 1961, by the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It took 56 years to complete the construction of World's 2nd biggest dam.
Prime Minister Modi on the occasion mentioned there were many reasons for the delay in the project completion. Because of some environmental and rehabilitation issues, Supreme Court's gave a stay order in 1996. Then the court allowed resumption of work in October 2000.
This project that World Bank earlier had refused to fund and had also alleged that it would ruin the environment, As mentioned to NDTV, PM added India too had decided that World Bank or no World Bank, we will build the Mega Sardar Sarovar Dam with our blood and sweat. After the 2001 earthquake, when this project picked up pace and showed the world what India can truly do. The same World Bank had to eat humble pie, swallow its pride and was forced to give India's Sardar Sarovar Dam project the world's topmost environment-friendly project award," said the Prime Minister.
The Sardar Sarovar project is the highest concrete dam in India and also the biggest dam in terms of concrete used in it.The length of the dam is 1.2-km and depth is 163 metres. It has till now produced 4,141 crore units of electricity from its two power houses -- river bed powerhouse and canal head powerhouse -- with an installed capacity of 1,200 MW and 250 MW, respectively. This special day of the inauguration of building such a strong project also coincides with PM's birthday.
