Oceans cover three fourth of our entire earth's surface. Here are some amazing facts about the oceanic water and its expanse.

We all are well aware about the expanse of the ocean and it is the home for a whole new aquatic ecosystem. 72 percent of earth surface is covered with oceanic water. More fascinating part is that 95 percent of this oceanic expanse is kept unexplored! Fact is that we have much more information about celestial bodies than we have about oceans. Let’s know some of these amazing facts.

Challenger Deep

Challenger Deep is the deepest point in the oceanic bed about 11,000 metres below the sea surface reported till date. This depth is even more than the height of the World’s highest peak-Mount Everest which is only 8000 metres. If you try observing a ship from an aeroplane high up in the sky, you won’t be able to spot the ship. Same happens when you try to observe the same ship from the bottom of the ocean.

Oceanic water will take a thousand years to traverse the entire globe

Yes it is true. The movement of oceanic water is very slow. The tides, waves and currents cause the movement of the oceanic water. If we consider the movement of a wave from on point of ocean across the globe and back to that point, it will take 1000 years for the same to complete it. There is another concept of Deep Ocean Circulation that also facilitates the forward motion in the oceanic waters.

Oxygen production

You will be shocked to know that 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe is from ocean! The organisms responsible for the oxygen production are small microscopic species called Phytoplankton. These are so small that they can’t be seen with the naked eye. They are present right on the surface of the oceanic water. They contribute majorly to the oxygen production from the ocean. Almost 200 million tons of Phytoplankton are produced on the oceanic water surface which clearly gives us an idea of the immense amount of oxygen generated by them.

Oceanic salt

We know how dense the oceanic waters as compared to other water bodies are. Salts are the main reason for their dense nature. 35 parts of 1000 parts of oceanic water are salts. Study says that there is so much of salt in the oceanic water that if all the salt is extracted, it will cover the entire earth’s surface by 5 feet. Also there is a beauty secret associated with the sea salts. Ancient Egyptians were very much conscious about their skin care regime and said that sea salt from the Dead Sea had loads of minerals that had multiple skin benefits. The beautiful Egyptian Pharaoh, Queen Cleopatra used to dissolve 2 cups of Dead Sea salt in her bath water that had anti-aging properties.

Point Nemo

Point Nemo is considered to be the remotest point in the ocean as it is very difficult to access it. It is at a distance of 2,688 kilometers or 1,450 nautical miles from any nearest land. The point was found in the year 1992 with the help of advanced technologies with great difficulty. It is very difficult to visit this point and hence there are no visitors reported until now.
