Wake Up for Our Children! | My Indian Dream

It is Time to ACT! Let's wake up to the fact that we have taken away our children's right to a clean environment and healthy body...

Kerala- God's own country. I remember how as a child I was very excited to visit this beautiful state which also happens to be my native place. No sooner had we reached the ancestral home,we siblings would drop our baggage and run to the fields. The beautiful scenery would invigorate us and dispel the tiredness of the long journey. We would instantly feel refreshed in the lap of nature. The rows of coconut trees in the horizon, the grasshoppers dancing and glittering in the sun above the green fields laden with crops, watching small fishes jerking here and there in small ponds, crossing canals over makeshift bridges which happened to be just a tree trunk are all lovely memories that will never fade.

No wonder I felt that same excitement again a few days ago when I got to visit Kerala for a wedding. The train journey from the airport to my relative's house would take three hours and I was thrilled to get a window seat.So now it was just me and nature.Being one with nature is like being one with God, so I was looking forward to that indescribable experience. To my dismay , all I could see was innumerable houses with a patch of green here and there.Images of buildings and commercial establishments went fleeting by as the train took up speed. The scenery of vast fields, lakes and rivers and mountains that my eyes yearned to see eluded me and I fell asleep.

I woke up with a start when another train roared past mine in the adjacent track.I suddenly realized that we all have to wake up...wake up and fight for our children's future. They too have a right to experience the beauty of nature...to see great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies. The exploitation of our planet for our selfish needs has led to drastic climate change, animals becoming extinct, holes in ozone layer and even the air we breathe is not free of chemicals.Lets wake up to the fact that we have taken away our children's right to a clean environment and healthy body. Its time to reverse the damage we have done due to haphazard construction and deforestation. We need to wake up for our children .As the saying goes- 'We have not inherited this earth from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children'.
